YMCA Resettlement Project 2010
75% of all under 18s released from custody reoffend within 12 months of release. A quarter of children and young people in contact with the youth justice system have learning disabilities and one third has a major mental health need.
Since May 2010 we have been working in partnership with HMP Hindley YOI to develop a North West Offender Services strategy and to deliver a resettlement project in partnership with Liverpool, Lancaster, Southport and Manchester YMCAs. A YMCA worker and a team of 6 volunteers deliver youth work programmes and informal education inside the prison and offer resettlement support to young people upon leaving custody through our North West network of YMCAs and YMCA Training providers. We can provide access to supported accommodation, training courses, apprenticeship schemes, work placements and volunteering opportunities alongside continuing support and mentoring through YMCA staff and volunteers.
We have worked with 50 young people to date since the project started in May 2010. 18 have gained accreditation through AQA awards and we are supporting a number of young people with their transitions back into the community, one with a Future Jobs Fund post and others with volunteering opportunities and access to training.
